Sound For The Trailer
Sound is an important element in any type of video, especially in a horror trailer this is because it's something that builds tension this is almost like a trailer. Sound in horror is important because it creates feelings and emotions such as, panic, stress, disgust and fear.
Inspirations:
This is the official trailer for sinister, they have used a variety of sounds on this trailer such as, the music they start to play during the first part of the trailer (0.29) they don't keep it on for too long however, is does create feelings such as, unease and fear. They use many thuds throughout the whole trailer, the thuds are mainly used on reaction shots (0.53) and when we see the antagonist. I like the way they use sound at 1:16 when we see the antagonist, they didn't allow it to go completely silent, they added a sound affect that worked very well with the scene, I believe we could do something similar to this for one of our scenes where we see our antagonist. I also like the silence towards the end of the trailer 2:19, it builds tension which I believe is crucial in any horror related outcome, certainly in a trailer; I believe this worked very well towards the end.
This is the official trailer for the Conjuring, I really like the first part of the trailer because it has a very jolly music to it, an up beat sound. I like when there is silence on the 0.53 second; to break the silence they open an wardrobe with a creek. After 1.00 the sound changes into something that feels dark, I like the way they added in wind sound effects at 1.26. I like the way they used a thud when there was silence, the silence was already building tension and the thud added to it. I like the way they use the heartbeat sound at 1.47, it suits the scene of the character going around the house in a frustrated emotion. I like the way they used sound to build tension once again at 2.10, this worked really well with the scene because we was expecting to see the antagonist. The best part of the trailer is the part when we hear her screaming when there is a blank screen(2.24), this has worked very good with the trailer. They added a bell sound effect for the credits which sound very good for the ending.
This is the Annabelle trailer, I believe the best part of the sound starts on the 0.58 second, the music went very well with the scenes; I like the fact that when they has the scary character walking past they still played the same type of music this shows that they have subverted the idea of having thuds when we see the antagonist. At 1.18 I like the way the sewing machine creates the sound affect that builds tension, it worked well with the camera angle of a extreme close up to her fingers and then the disasters start to begin. When the character gets dragged they used a really good sound affect that's very jumpy even though something like that was expected. I also like the thud they used when the character was looking under the bed and the doll drops down.

This sound file is what we are thinking to have towards the first part of the trailer, I'll start using the sound after 6 seconds because that's when the music will start; we won't play is for too long or if we do we'll be adding in the thuds and other sound effects.
This soundtrack/music creates an a very uneasy emotion for the viewer, this is because it sounds like they're in an empty room with someone playing with blades and saws, this makes them feel uncomfortable. I used this in one of the scenes I experimented on and it has worked very well because it seems as if someone is in the same corridor as the viewer.

Soundtrack Pro
Horror Sound Effects
Thuds
|
I experimented with SoundTrack Pro with the sounds I had, I experimented with thuds, music and voices (whispering). This allowed me to add thuds in places I wanted it to be which makes sound more affective. SoundTrack Pro helps me adjust the length of each music or sound affect I add; this also helps me have a continuation of certain sound affects. SoundTrack Pro is very similar to the way we add sound on FinalCut this helped me because it wasn't hard to figure out how to use the software. I'll be experimenting more on SoundTrack Pro in order to get the right sound for certain scenes in the trailer.
Horror Music
Horror Voices
|
These are some of the sounds I have experimented with in order to add sound in to some scenes and the trailer overall, all of the sounds are horror related and work very well with our trailer.
Experimenting With Sound:
|
|
I experimented using Final Cut Pro to add sound on to this scene, the music I used was called "Road To Hell", I used this because of the pace/speed of the music; this has been the most affective for this scene because there is not too much going on, it's a calm scene even though it may build some tension towards the end. I added a thud at the end when the door shuts, this has worked very well because it builds tension almost as something is going to come out/pop up. In this scene we have a missing board therefore we couldn't have a fast pace soundtrack like some first parts in horror movie trailers. I also believe the music went well with the type of camera angle and movement we used.
Stages to create horror sound video (Animatic): |
For this video I also experimented using Final Cut Pro, I used 3 different types of sounds which were knocking on door (only used the first 2-3 seconds), right behind you and a whispering voice. I believe the music worked very well with the pace of the scene, because it was fast at one point when we tilted it up to the missing board, I believe this soundtrack worked very effectively. I added a whispering voice to make it sound like a demon is around viewer which makes them feel uncomfortable. I added a sound affect that's similar to a brutal thunder at the end which builds tension towards the end which is crucial in anything horror related.

On the first stage I imported the video onto final cut, I muted the video so I can add the horror music and the sound effects.
This stage I started to import some music in, I used a track called ' Right behind you', I made this sound track go throughout the whole scene because it creates an uneasy emotion for the viewer.
This is the final stage of adding sound onto the scene, in this stage I started to add sound effects such as thuds, lightning and knocking on the door. I then exported the video on to QuickTime which makes is compatible with YouTube and it allows me to add it on to our channel.
