The Shooting Script and Location REcce:
The
shooting script is a break down of our screen play; it includes
everything we are to do from our props, our actors/actresses and our
film and location times. Here in production you will see most of the organization for the filming of our trailer.A Location recce is a pre-filming visit to a location to work out its suitability for shooting, including access to necessary facilities and assessment of any potential lighting or sound issues. This was extremely important for us as we wanted to waste no time on the day by working out whether rooms worked with our shots or not. All in all the recce was helpful as it saved us a lot of time with setting up equipment and changing any locations etc.

The Improved Storyboard:
Below you will find a seven paged storyboard, I took it upon myself to recreate the storyboard as it was unclear and it would have been harder to follow the instructions on the day of filming. I changed things like the clarity of the shot instructions and the images, I made the sketches a little more neat with drawings to the best of my ability (Drawing is not my forte); I also colored in the images to make it stand out on the page and so they could differentiate from characters and furniture etc. Lastly I improved things like the shot types and the length of each shot; on our previous storyboard the shots and lengths were not listed each time and a lot of the shots were repeated so I tried to mix up the shots where relevant and accurately set times for each shot.
The Five Locations:
LOCATION 1: THE ART AREA
1. Wide shot - 2 seconds (5)
Zooming into the window to see image. 2. Wide shot - 3 seconds (6) Tilting from down to upwards to establish the door number. 3. Extreme close up - 1.5 seconds (7) Zooming into door number. 4. Two shot - 5 seconds (9) Filming conversation between the girls. 5. Wide shot - 2.5 seconds (11) Panning from left to right, to see all missing pictures. 6. Long shot - 3 seconds (14) Filming conversation between people, shouting across hallway. 7. Mid shot - 4 seconds (17) Mrs. Tresex being filmed writing something down, then looking up. 8. Extreme close up - 1.5 seconds (26) Close up to hand opening the door. 9. Over the shoulder shot - 2 seconds (27) Camera showing covered image. 10. Extreme close up - 1.5 seconds (29) Close up to hand being dragged away from camera. 11. Long shot - 2 seconds (31)
Walking over to image (builds tension) 12. Close up - 1.5 seconds (36) Hand about to pull off cover. 13. Mid shot - 1 seconds (38) Steady image of frame. 14. Mid shot - 1.5 seconds (39) Jordan looking around classroom. 15. Close up - 1 seconds (40) Steady camera of image. 16. Close up - 1 seconds (41) Steady camera of image. 17. Close up - 1.5 seconds (43) In girls toilet fixing herself. 18. Wide shot - 4 seconds (45) Fading lights / flicker. 19. Wide shot - 1.5 seconds (51) Mrs Tresex in the mirror behind her. |
Here is where most of the shots will take place, we are guaranteed to spend the longest time in this area; considering here is where we have a majority of the shots.
Positives:
-The art area extends quite far out ,meaning we have an advantage of using little ares that look different; but in actual fact its all the same place. This saves us time and gives us variety but it saves us time as they are in the same area.
- I really like how big the space is, the corridor and the art rooms for example are really wide; this means that we have no problem setting up equipment like track and dolly for example. It also means any shots where we purposely see everything (wide shot) it is also convenient for that.

Negatives:
- The bathroom areas lighting is quite dim, meaning we might have issues filming with minimal lighting. Although this is a problem we have been made aware so we can bring miniature lights to brighten up the area.
- In contrast to the fact that the art areas corridor is very well lit,( due to all the large windows), we came to realize there might be issues with seeing shadows and reflections in extreme close ups of props like a bulletin board for example.
- In contrast to the fact that the art areas corridor is very well lit,( due to all the large windows), we came to realize there might be issues with seeing shadows and reflections in extreme close ups of props like a bulletin board for example.
Summary:
Lighting:
The lighting overall was pretty good, The majority of the art area is very well lit because of there extremely large windows, creating natural light, the only problem is the small lift area as there was really bad lighting and no windows in the area to brighten it up and as mentioned before the toilet itself as that was quite badly lit. Because of the natural light in the other areas we would have to come prepared on the day in case it was rainy or foggy or it could even be very sunny meaning we would have to bring extra light and cloths just to make sure we are not thrown off by any weather situation. |
Space:
Space in the art area shouldn't be an issue as on a whole it is quite spacious regardless, However again with the toilet section, space is quite tight and things are very close together meaning we might have issues getting any equipment we need inside and also it could determine whether one of our shots work, because we need to make sure the camera isn't seen but with the small space and the reflection of the mirror that could prove to be a problem. |
Power:
Whilst visiting the location we took note of any available power sources, the art rooms were well stocked with plug sockets and USB ports, which meant on the day we shouldn't have had any problems with electricity and power sources, we also noticed there were facilities like computers and interactive whiteboard which help us with props as our antagonist is a teacher. But again the toilet proved to be an issue as it didn't have any plug sockets available to us, so we had to find battery powered light sources as extra light to use in those locations. |
Inspirations:I also really liked this clip, as we wanted to incorporate entities that could not be seen, this clip demonstrates an evil entity dragging her by her hair, something similar to this will be incorporated like a student being dragged away for example. As the art area was quite spacious, scenes like this could be achieved.
|
Vlog:The Vlog was quite helpful as it helped us work out angles we could use and shoot at. It also showed you how we would get around some awkward matters.
|
Location 2: The Chaplaincy Area
1. Close up - 3 seconds (15)
Close up of priest talking. 2. Wide shot - 2 seconds (21) Wide shot of priest fixing alter. 3. 180 degree angle - 2 seconds ( 22) Shot of priest fixing the table still. 4. 180 degree angle - 4 seconds (23) Showing Mrs. Tresex talk. 5. Close up - 1.5 seconds 1.5 seconds (24) Showing her angry face. |
Although we have less shots here, I think we also might spend a good amount of time here because some of the shots are difficult, for example to 180 degree turn will be quite time consuming as we have to make sure they are steady etc.
Positives:
- The room was big enough for our props, filming and equipment. This was an advantage as it meant there would be no issues with our filming day in this location.
Negatives:
- The room had unnecessary things in there like school books and dictionaries that weren't relevant to the scene, meaning we would have to remove all the items beforehand to film successfully.
Summary
Lighting:
The lighting in the chaplaincy was really good, but in some scenes where we wanted a certain person or item to be really lit the room had, the facilities and space to put the lighting equipment inside. The room had no natural light but it had several light switches meaning there was more than one light bulb around the room giving us an advantage. |
Space:
The room was really spacious and had furniture in it that could be easily removed and re arranged around the room, However all the furniture and props in the room were relevant to our piece so they were kept. |
Power:
The power sources in the room were really good, as they were easily accessible. |
Inspirations: |
Vlog: |
I really liked this as we have a scene using a priest warning the innocent, this helps as we see the angles they used to shoot it and it helps us give the actors/actresses tips on how the scene should run.
|
This shows the hallway and the inside of the actual chaplaincy through a window, it just captures the lighting and the wideness of the hallways and how spacious the room proves to be.
|
LOCATION 3: THE R.E Area:
1. Over the shoulder shot - 2 seconds (3)
Filming the two girls having conversation. 2. Over the shoulder shot - 2 seconds (4) Seeing the reaction and reply of friend. 3. Extreme close up - 2 seconds (13) Zoom into the picture on top, (Alice). 4. Long shot - 3 seconds (16) Tilting from down to up to help show ritual sign. |
These scenes shouldn't take too long, as they are pretty straight forward with using the track and dolly etc. So we should hopefully be able shoot these quite quickly.
|
5. Long shot - 2 seconds (18)
Jordan isolated in corridor, fading to black.
6. Long shot - 1.5 seconds (19)
Jordan being surrounded by random people.
7. High angle - 1.5 seconds (20)
Jordan isolated once more.
8. Extreme close up - 2 seconds (37)
Soul being sucked out.

7. High angle - 1.5 seconds (20)

8. Extreme close up - 2 seconds (37)
Soul being sucked out.
This area should also be pretty straight forward as we have only a few shots to complete here, I'm only worried about the time it will take us to set up equipment given the space issues we have.
Positives:
- The Corridor in the R.E area is really narrow, which works for the scenes we need. We want to build tension as if the walls are closing in and connote that there's no escape, the the narrow walls are really helpful as they are easily captured when being filmed.
- I really liked how there are natural props that make it clear its an R.E corridor, having religion in a film that's based around the devil is essential so the fact that its clear helps us so that we don't have to make it obvious to the audience.

Negatives:
- The lighting here is also quite bad as the windows are very high up and it doesnt provide any natural light in the scenes we need.
- Although we want the narrow walls, it might prove to be an issue when trying to set up technical equipment like extra lighting or the track and dolly etc.
- Although we want the narrow walls, it might prove to be an issue when trying to set up technical equipment like extra lighting or the track and dolly etc.
Summary:
Lighting:
The lighting in the R.E corridor is another area that proved to be problem, the natural light did not provide any brightness or light a sit was extremely far up and wouldn't show up in any scenes. We then moved on to using artificial lights like the switches in the hallways, that didn't work out as it was quite dim as well and it didn't light up some of the areas we needed it to light up. So we decided we needed extra lights. |
Space:
Space wasn't a problem as that's how we initially wanted it, we wanted to portray that on camera but we did find, that the space for the equipment will very tight and having the crew helping out on the day, I realized some people would have to drop behind and we would have to minimize the equipment we used in this area. |
Power:
There was a few plug sockets that we could use for artificial lights but they were in awkward places so it was harder to use, I decided we would have to bring perhaps extension leads or battery powered items to help us instead. |
Inspirations: |
Vlog: |
I really liked this scene, as it is similar to what my group and I wanted to do. The part where it keeps flashing from the twins being dead and then alive is what we will try to imitate. We wanted to do it in the R.E corridor but the narrow corridors might be a problem to us when trying to create this scene.
|
This Vlog basically just shows areas where we wanted to film at, and then weighed out our options. We also put in our alternatives.
|
The Diner Area:
1. Long shot - 2 seconds (25)
Jordan running away from something,(scared).
Jordan running away from something,(scared).
This scene should also be quick and easy as there is only one shot in the scene.
Positives:
- I really liked how isolated the area looked, it looks very unkempt and abandoned which is good because it adds to the scariness as if someone or something will pop out of no where.
Negatives:
- There is literally no lighting in this area, which might make it hard to film facial expressions or see actors/actresses clearly.
- The barriers and extra items in the area might be difficult to put our equipment so we wont be able to use a track and dolly her.
- The barriers and extra items in the area might be difficult to put our equipment so we wont be able to use a track and dolly her.
Summary:
Lighting:
As there is no lighting it's difficult to have our footage come out clearly. Our natural light is blocked by the canape placed over it and as it is outside it is hard to find power sources. This means again we will have to replace socket based lights with battery powered lights. this is a disadvantage for us as the space is very open so I don't know how effective the lights will be. |
Space:
The space is awkward so we can only film certain shots in the area. This particular area is narrow which isn't necessarily good for our actress as it could be hazardous with all the barriers. |
Power:
Power is another issue for us as it is outside so we cannot use plug sockets. However we could use plug sockets if we opened doors but they would be picked up in scene which would look very bad. |
Inspiration:I really liked this scene, as it builds tension by switching from shots and angles. I would like to imitate this in the running scene, I would like our audience to feel scared for our protagonist as we won't or we will hardly show though antagonist.
|
Vlog:This clip shows which shots and angles we could use, it picks up on any hazards when trying to shoot certain scenes.
|
The Abandoned Area:
1. Extreme Long shot - 2 seconds (2)
Establishing shot, showing the building.
Establishing shot, showing the building.
I'm worried about the time it might take us to set up equipment, as we will need things that give us height so we can get the whole building. We will need to make sure we are prepared quick and early before we lose the natural light.
Positives:
-It differs from the rest of the college building, so it gives diversity and makes it look like a separate location other than college.
Negatives:
-using the right equipment to get the perfect shot, might be tricky.
Inspirations:I really liked the different techniques they used to open the scene. the fact that its not just the standard establishing shots gives me inspiration to try and recreate.

The Call Sheets:
What is a call sheet?
The daily call sheet is a film making term for a sheet of paper created by an assistant director or director that is issued to the cast and crew of a film production to inform them of where and when they should report for a particular day of filming.
These are useful as they are an organised way of making sure everyone knows where they should be and what they should be doing, it also saves a lot of time because we don't need to spend a lot of time talking and discussing what we need to do and where would should be next.
Each call sheet contains: production company, location of filming, date and time of filming, shot number and shot type, length and description of shot, equipment and prop list and cast and crew.

The Chaplaincy
The Diner
The Abandoned School
I provided the shot number that was written on the storyboard to avoid any confusion like on how to shoot it or how our cast should be placed etc. The shot type and shot length saves a lot of time because we then know how long to shoot for; for example if our shot is 2 seconds we know that we film it for 4-5 seconds so that there's enough space to cut and edit. Likewise the description was also helpful on things where the story board couldn't show panning or zooming I wrote it so that it was clear.
